Sorry if this question means that I suck horribly, but how do I make my
waveforms look like these? Mine look very binary, and I would love to see
that sort of spectral ghostliness behind my waves. Thanks, if anybody knows
what the hell I’m talking about.

Not sure how clearing the throat is called a “cough” but I’ll assume it’s

Get the performer to play at the volume level they will be at when
recording, and adjust the gain knob on your interface / preamp until the
loudest peaks hit -6. In reality, even this is a bit too loud. Cheaper
preamps / converters work better when the average level is around -18dB,
not -3. At -18, you’re guaranteed not to get clipping if something
unexpectedly loud happens. It’s better to record quiet and turn up than
record loud and turn down.
